350.00

Hand-tied feather lei hulu manu made in Hawai'i. Ties around the neck with a silk ribbon in the back.

The first settlers from the Marquesas brought the art of feather work to Hawai‘i 1,500 years ago. Feather work was exclusively for ali`i (Hawaiian royalty) and was asymbol of prestige and power.

Making lei hulu is tedious work that involves sorting the feathers by size and color, tying them in small bunches and fastening the bunches to an ‘olona-fiber cord. Today the art of feather lei making is perpetuated by only a few teachers throughout the islands.
