According to records found in Indian mythology, handwoven chanderi textiles were first introduced by Lord Krishna's evil cousin, Shishupal, during the Vedic period. Due to the textile's sheer and airy texture it is sometimes referred to as 'woven air'. Throughout the Mughal era in India, chanderi was increasingly popular among royalty.
